The hills like white elephant
In this essay, i will make a Little análisis on the short story called “the
hills like white elephant”. Born on July 21, 1899, in Cicero (now in Oak Park),
Illinois, Ernest Hemingway served in World War I and worked in journalism
before publishing his story collection In Our Time. He was renowned for novels
like The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms, For Whom the Bell Tolls, and The
Old Man and the Sea, which won the 1953 Pulitzer. In 1954, Hemingway won the
Nobel Prize. He committed suicide on July 2, 1961, in Ketchum, Idaho. The hills
like white elephant was one of the his most famous literature work.
The story opens with a dialogue between the man and woman. In their
dialogue, conflict is created as the characters face what most readers believe
to be the obstacle of unexpected pregnancy. This is assumed through symbolism
and the titles meaning. The term “white elephant” was used in the Swing era,
and usually stood for an unwanted gift. This story touches on an issue most
people are very familiar with: Communication problems in a relationship.
Although the couple in the story are talking, they seem unable to convey their
differing opinions to each other. The theme is established throughout the
story, but the reader first notices the trouble in the couple’s conversation in
line 11, when the girl says that the hills “look like white elephants”. In the
end they take the train and go to there destination. The ending fight lets the
reader belive that the girl choses to keep the baby.
In conclusion, the story ends on a cliffhanger. The reader is put in the
position of choosing the ending. I believe that the girl decide to keep the
baby. The story touches two major controversial themes: no communication and abortion.
There communication is almost none existent and they were fighting during the
whole story. The abortion part is the secret in the story; in which the reader
needed to identify. In the end, this story was a perfect way to touch on some
controversial theme.
